I journeyed to Montana and Wyoming from the beginning of July to mid-August, and participated in a six-week field course with five and a half other students, plus our teacher. We car camped in Yellowstone National Park the first week, then took a week-long backpacking trip to the Lionhead roadless area in the Gallatin National Forest. The flies and mosquitos were relentless and ruthless, nigh maddening, for the first two weeks.
Cindy went home, and the rest of us continued to our next backpack trip: 11 days in the Absaroka (say it Abzorka) - Beartooth Wilderness. Much of it burned in the 80s, so we hiked through a lot of dead trees and regenerating forests.
After a few days camping, we took our final (10 day) backpacking trip in the Scapegoat Wilderness, which is right next to the Bob Marshall Wilderness. We experienced rain, hail, and thunder, all at different times.
I then continued by myself north to Glacier National Park for a whirlwind hiking tour, then drove back to Bellingham.
